EXPLORING BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES: Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Selling, Web Design, BrandinG, Promoting, Accounting, Finance, Law, Hospitality, Videography, Photography, Social Media, Tourism

Welcome to CAPS Business Solutions. We work with students that have an interest in exploring careers primarily in business and entrepreneurship, although, anyone that wants a CAPS experience is welcome! We are honored to be associated/hosted at the Center for Business Growth and Innovation (CBGI) inside the Business Community Services Building (BCS), located in the Southside of UNI Campus. CBGI has a 20-year history in the Cedar Valley and has built a network of resources and services designed to attract, connect, and accelerate small business and start-up growth with business assistance, capital, partner resources, and valuable connections. Because of this, the student associates that come to the BCD have the opportunity to make connections that could help them in the future to start a business of their own in many different fields. UNI CBGI, along with the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC) are excellent sites to explore careers in any business field.  

Student associates in our strand have had the opportunity to work with diverse clients, including the City of Cedar Falls, Cedar Falls Utilities, Invision Architecture, Omega Cabinetry, Sidecar Coffee, Cedar Valley STEM, Cedar Valley Victors, Cedar Falls School District and many more. We encourage our student associates to look for projects themselves and to make relationships with different employers in the area by doing career interest conversations. The student associate spends time with the professional in a career environment that they are interested in pursuing, and learn more about what it takes to be a successful professional, and what it is really like to work in that field. Because of that, associates have the possibility to reach out to any business/organization in the area they may be interested in and work on a project, or at least tour and do a career conversation.

A large portion of the time spent at CAPS is dedicated to complete REAL projects for REAL clients. Because of this, some of the main takeaways for the associates include starting their professional network(LinkedIn), improving their time and project management skills(Agile Scrum), improving their communication and technical skills, and having a better understanding and exposure to a professional work environment. A highlight from this past year is how several of our alumni have been hired for professional internships, received college scholarships and been accepted to their college of choice, all due to their CAPS experiences. The Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) Business Communication and Design course is for students who are interested in a combination of Business, Communication Skills, Multimedia Design, Entrepreneurship, and innovation. Associates (students) use technical knowledge to create solutions to real problems. The class will include a broad introduction of college and career readiness and employability skills. Associates will also learn the essential components of Business Communication including Design processes through the completion of client's projects. All associates will have hands-on, active learning opportunities with a full immersion in real-world projects developed in conjunction with local business partners. This course will be a 3-period block, with instruction taking place at the Center for Business Growth and Innovation on UNI Campus. Successful completion of this course will also earn 3 college credits from Hawkeye Community College.

Essential Skills and Concepts for the Course

  1. The student will learn how to solve problems, manage projects, communicate with clients and ultimately provide value to them.
  2. The student will learn how to manage their time, how lo look for and how to respond to feedback.
  3. The student will demonstrate an awareness of different careers of their interest and will identify careers that align with their interests, personalities and life/career goals.
  4. The student will develop technical skills that are required for completing their projects or technical skills that they are interested in learning.
  5. The student will demonstrate and improve on their professional skills, including communication skills, conflict resolution skills, time management skills, critical thinking and team working skills.
